There is a smooth and precisely dimensioned cylindrical step (called “shoulder”) in the shank, the diameter of which is larger than that of the threaded section. The shoulder serves as a shaft for guiding, positioning, shearing, and supporting rotating or sliding parts (e.g., pulleys, gears, bushings).
